The kids are on Spring break here in Japan until some time next week. And while they frolic in the sun, or more likely at Jusco clogging up the manga aisle in the bookstore or loitering in the food court, their teachers are stuck at work doing whatever teachers do when they don't have class over here. At least, until lunch time rolls around. With no school lunch in sight, it seems like teachers are free to go out and take long, leisurely lunch breaks. And that's just what me and MaryAnn did the other day, meeting up at a place called Charlie's in Tomigusuku for some Okinawan diner grub.
Charlie's is the hot spot for the senior citizen crowd here. Other than the staff, we were probably the youngest people up in the joint. Not that I mind being surrounded by old, flatulent people. Apparently the place has been around forever, so the people in there probably started going as kids and just continued their habit into their twilight years. The menu features a mix of traditional Okinawan food, traditional Japanese food, and randomness like sandwiches and an assload of deserts. On the desert front pie may be their specialty...I don't know because I am not a pie fan (unless it's poontang flavored), but when you walk in you're greeted with pretty much a wall of pie. MaryAnn and I split some french fries for an appetizer. As the main meal she got hooked up with this set of seafoods and potatoes and shit, while I got a chicken namba rice bowl. The pictures deceived me. I thought it would be tiny but it was huge, and I was full the whole rest of the day. Chicken namba is the shit holla at that.
Even though it'd be really nice to be employed right now and getting some sweet yen into my grubby little hands, I know I'm going to miss the days when I had all this free time to do whatever the fuck I wanted.
