I'm fairly sure he's around in Master and Commander as well - he and Killick are Jack's followers from very early on, and come to be his servants at the beginning of Post Captain, which suggests they were introduced in the previous book.
Yaoi is the Japanese term for fairly graphic slash (I think), whereas shounen-ai would probably be slash with an R-rating or lower. Comes up more frequently in anime fan fiction, but you'll see it in other fandoms, too.
ok, yes, i guess you could say that previously i've read some very graphic slash, mostly in TV fandoms and the occasional movie
not that i'm opposed to some nice slow non-graphic romance ;)
thanks for the adagio recommendation, that was lovely *happy sigh* and i found spider bite too, also very wonderful :D both very nice jack!bottom stories :)
can anyone point me in the direction of some jack/stephen icons?
It's a great fandom - I'm fairly new myself. Lots of fics have Jack on the bottom. Mostly I think it has to do with Jack being in charge of the ship and therefore more likely to give up control in the bedroom. Plus Stephen usually is seen to have more experience with men.
Just one note - in the movie Jack is shorter, but the books definitely make the Stephen the short one. Books vs. Movie canon. ;)
I think you'll like the books as you go along if you continue to read the series - I found the first four or so to be fantastic. Both Stephen and Jack have more to their personalities than was strictly shown in the movie and there is a lot of humor and adventure to be had in the books. I love the movie, though - it made me fall in love with the characters.
i totally agree with you about jack giving up control in the bedroom, that's exactly how i see him as well :)
stephen is seen to have more experience with men? how so? is that something that comes out in the books?
i haven't read the books enough to know what is going on so i prefer to read movie-canon, but i did notice that they described jack as the larger of the two ;)
but i prefer their characterisations from the movie, at least until i get a better feel for the books, i am certainly loving master & commander so far :D
i only really understand about one word in five when it comes to the terminology but i'm not letting that stop me *lol* ;)
and yes, it was the movie that made me fall in love with the characters also :)
As for Stephen being more experienced, well O'Brian never came out and said *that*. But it is said sometimes in the fics I've read, but mostly I think it would be true as a physician (seen practically everything) and as a intellectual (the kind of people one might hang out with and mentions of Greek culture, etc.).
Also - there are many mentions of homosexual conduct in the book if you look. A few mentions of it happening at sea and also one of Stephen's friends is known to be a homosexual (leading one to think of the possibilities...), etc. There is a lot to get from the books that just didn't make it to the movie (Jack's romance with Sophie and later his children and Stephen being a spy and desperately in love with cruel Diana). But I do agree that the movie was excellent and I never would have tried the books without it. ;) I bought a special edition of the dvd just to get the deleted scenes and behind the scenes extras. I even bought the book of the making of the movie, for goodness sake. I might be obsessed...
In addition to Prizes Over Discovery, (linked below), I'd recommend Physic by shallott, and maybe The World Turned Upside Down which is that rarest of beasts, a good genderfuck fic, and has Jack being turned into a woman.
I've noticed in this fandom that bookfen tend to think Steven's the top, and moviefen think it's Jack.

Just look through the old posts here and http://perfectduet.fandomish.net and you should find something.
Trying to find some of my own favorite links has not gone well. I didn't organize them very well. I'm a mess. Where is the "Adagio" fic? Anyone?
