I found this while lurking around somethingawful today. The thread was about horrible weddings but omg! So epic!
They've been having a hilarious debate with one side declaring that theme weddings are selfish and disrespectful to the guests, and that weddings are serious rituals that should not be for entertainment purposes. The other side says it should be whatever the bride and groom want to make it about, because it is their special day and no one else's. Ah goons.
Having been to a few weddings now, I think it is clear that what makes for a good wedding is the love of the couple getting married. Aaltair and hesperornis both had weddings that were clear expressions of love for their partners. They were very different ceremonies, but both were great. On the other hand, the wedding of my cousin (the one who just got arrested) was really trashy, and it was obvious it was more about her being princess-for-a-day than about being in love with someone. Not surprisingly, she is now separated from her second husband. My sister's wedding, done in a Reno quick-e-wed chapel, had a lot more meaning than my cousin's hillbilly church thing because there was real love between the bride and groom.
