...I have no idea where this came from. Genfic, yay, but strange. No research went into this except for watching the movies a while ago, so I have no idea how right the facts are. It just felt angsty right. *shrugs*

It's called "Antiques," set in the Indiana Jones movieverse sometime within the trilogy. Please don't hurt me.

Marcus Brody always secretly envied Indy when he looked a little rumpled and bore a surreptitious lipstick stain on his collar. It was never even the same color of lipstick from day to day. He wondered if Indy was having an affair with a fashion-crazy secretary, was having affairs with several secretaries, was randomly attacked by overzealous female students in the hallways, or even just applied the lipstick to his own shirt in an attempt to make Marcus jealous.

He wondered if Indy even cared that he felt this way. It was really a very lonely life to lead--a professor in a classroom where no one wanted to be, a curator in a museum where the only company is the other old bones...

He watched Indy grow up, never said a word of complaint. He would never admit to the daydreams he had about being the younger man, about having exciting adventures almost daily. Beautiful nubile young women would press themselves against him; their eyelashes would flutter enticingly.

The antiques in his museum seemed, at times, to mock him. "Look at us," they whispered. "We're all you're going to get. Jones knows that--he gives us to you out of both pity and guilt. Poor old man with nothing else but this! He'll never go out on adventures, inept old bungler; he'll never find someone who loves him for being strong and brave and handsom, doddering old fool..."

These were the times when Marcus chose to get lost in his own museum, hoping that no one would ever find him.

Indy did find him once, huddled and tear-stained in a corner far from the front desk. He helped Marcus to his feet, escorted him home to a lonely apartment, slept the night on the couch just to make sure he was okay.

Somehow this made it hurt more.
