Biochemisty . . .

No, I am NOT done for the semester. Unlike everyone else. I have five more pages to write (at the least). And non-science students out there- five to ten pages of chemistry is NOT like five to ten pages of feminist theory (which I have also written). It IS like five pages of syntax, say- that is, involving more technical anything than you'd ever like to see, containing sentences like: "An enzyme catalyzes this formation- during the second step of the cross-linking, a bacterial enzyme temporarily bonds to the D-ala subunit of the pentaglycine bridge (forming an acyl-enzyme intermediate), before undergoing deacylation (by hydrolysis), thus forming the bond between the bridge and the substrate".

Question: how did I end up doing SO MUCH BIOCHEMISTRY?

Dear Self-

Are you a masochist? Didn't you come to Marlboro to study something nice and squishy like, oh, what was it that the pre-plan said? Sustainable living? Green agriculture? WHERE DID IT GO SO HORRIBLY WRONG? When did you decide that you LIKE writing twenty pages on the biochemical aspects of penicillin resistance in bacteria, and then ten MORE pages on the biochemical effects of PCBs on the endocrine system? When, oh when, did you come to the point when you looked at a description of ecotoxicology ("An interdisciplinary science that deals with the fate and adverse effects of chemicals on ecosystems"), containing sentences like "The idea behind the Ah theory is that PCB-induced cytochrome P450 isozyme activity and other parameters of toxicity are mediated by a cytosolic receptor protein encoded by the Ah locus" and say, oh, that's JUST WHAT I WANT TO DO MY PLAN ON?? What did you do to my HAPPY SQUISHY SUSTAINABLE LIVING? When, oh when, did your Plan become MORE TECHNICAL THAN ASHLEY'S??? This is WRONG!!

I thought hippies like me never had to worry about details and hard facts and . . . oh, wait, I'm not a hippie. Maybe I want to be. Do you think if I smoked enough pot I could start writing about communes, instead? Or maybe I should try to do a plan on anime! Yeah! (Question: would that be MORE or LESS nerdy than biochemistry?)

AARRGGGHHHHH ::headdesk::

whining, academics, dorky
