Sarah has discovered the joy that is UNIX!! Let me back up.
My job involves very little computer work. However, the electron microscope (EM) that my job DOES involve BURST INTO FLAMES last week . . . so I'm data-crunching on the computer.
The computers that we use run Linux. The program that I have to use is operated only through command line prompts. I hadn't used the command-line in any computer since the days of my family's old DOS machine, and I found myself enjoying it thoroughly. It was on the second day of doing this that the revelation suddenly came-
These machines run LINUX. That means that the codes I'm using are UNIX. My machine at home runs OS X. That means that its seamy underbelly is composed of . . . UNIX!! I could use all this nifty stuff on MY COMPUTER!
I went right home and started noodling around . . . and am now thoroughly obsessed. I am very tempted to get rid of complex, clunky, memory-eating OS X and run smaller, streamlined, free Linux . . . Gary and Stacy, where are you when I need you? Also: Red Hat has about 50 games to play . . . several of which I am already addicted to.
teeheehee . . .
