The next Treehouse Reversebang story is done! Actually, it's two stories, because marbleglove wrote two separate possible scenarios to the prompt. Understandable I think, since she prompted me with a Methos crossover and then listed freaking Valdemar as a possibility. GOLD, RIGHT THERE. One is a fantastic, warm story with a bit of Teacher!Methos. The other ( Read more... )

Haha, yeah, Mercedes Lackey is the author of the Valdemar books. I feel like we were supposed to read them as kids to get the most out of them, because there are many parts about them that are cheesy or bizarre or occasionally kind of awful. Disclaimer: I missed the boat on these and to this day have only read the books with Vanyel in them, due to me having just discovered slash on the internet and finding out that one of Valdemar trilogies had a gay herald hero, and I was like, "OKAY THEN."

Basically, Valdemar is the nation of the Good Guys and their gimmick is that they have the Companions, magical white telepathic horses of GOOD who pick -- sorry, Choose -- a person to be their Herald and form a PSYCHIC BOND FOR LIFE. And then they run around the kingdom dressed in white (occasionally complaining about laundry bills) and doing good works.

The Valdemar universe also has life-bonding for some added goodness (and/or squickiness, depending on your preferences) for your id and also some other goofy fun stuff like therapists who apply therapy via sex and possibly telepathy. On the whole, it kind of feels like a fantasy verse written by very liberal hippies.

So. To sum up: Fun. Worth the quick read if cheesy fantasy angst and/or telepathic animal bonding is your thing. But seriously goofy. :D
