Puss' kidneys started going downhill in June, and after a spending three days at the vet on an IV drip, she seemed to be recovering. Gained weight back, etc. We learned, however, that she really only had one kidney, the other one being atrophied to the point of dysfunction. Genetic? Dunno. Anyhow, after a couple months of us injecting her with fluids every night, she started to go downhill again. Stopped eating, stayed in one spot all day, lost a bunch of weight. She was skin and bones. There wasn't much to be done, except drag it out. We put her to sleep this morning.
The hard thing about it was that, brain wise, she was still pretty alert and responsive. It was just that her body was all worn out. Not like Harriet, whose brain went ages ago, but who just keeps ballooning up like some kind of ossified hippopotamus.
Puss was a really weird/great cat. She brought a lot of character and life to the house, and I'll really miss her.
