I may be on the verge of seriously putting my foot in it with the latest Swan chapter.
I need your help!
Okay, in my head I hear Paul Prentice!Lestrade delivering a line about something he was wearing around his neck.
In my head, it sounds very definitely like he's saying "around me neck".
I blame Martin Freeman, who said "with a bowl of porridge in me hand" in the commentary of ASiP, which sort of cemented it in my head as a way of saying it when you're relaxed and sort of drawling and really don't give a toss about grammar, thank you very much.
But would Lestrade say it? Or would it make my readers imagine him as talking like a pirate?
He's from London, but possibly not originally, though he's been a Londoner for a very long time. He's not quite lower class, but not really middle class, sort of hovering on the margin. You already know he rides motorbikes and is a police officer, and he's based on the Rupert Graves character in Different for Girls.
All of this may help, it may not matter, I don't know! I'm a Yank! I'm hopeless here! Help me!
