(no subject)
So, I totally didn't know this before, but it seems that people in small town northern Wisconsin really hate Illinoisians, like a lot. I was driving with some of the people from my research internship and we were behind a car that was driving kind of stupidly and the girl that was driving (who's from a town near the UP of like 500 people) was like "no wonder, they're from Illinois...where I come from we really hate people from Illinois. My friends from home yell at me because I'm friends with people from Illinois at college." I thought that was kind of funny.
Anyways, the job is going well. The hours are kind of erratic. Some days I've been there for about 11 hours, and other days we got to leave a lot earlier. But the days we were there forever were because we were going on boat trips, which was fun. The first cruise we went on was on a rainy day, so it was kind of nasty and cold and wet but we went out again today and it was so nice...sunny and not too hot or cold! We were working most of the time taking samples and measurements and stuff, but towards the end of today, when we were all feeling lazy, we sat on the deck and relaxed and talked, which was nice. I got kind of sunburned, and I'm guessing that I'll have a horrible farmers tan by the end of the summer, but at least I won't be sickly pale.
I still don't really know what research I'll be doing this summer since my mentors aren't here yet. This means that I end up doing whatever random job they need me to do. On Wednesday I spent about 4 hours measuring nitrite in water sample, which was interesting at first but got kind of boring!
I like the people I'm working with...they're all really nice and cool, which is good. I kind of wish I was staying in the dorms so I could hang out with them more. But I'm glad I'm staying at home, because there I would need to buy and cook all my own food. Plus, by the end of the day I'm usually pretty tired out (I don't know why, I guess because I'm so busy and on my feet a lot all day), so it's nice to just come home and have dinner ready for me and relax. A bunch of the girls were talking about doing salsa lessons tomorrow night, which might be fun!
