Yarn Harlot Visits the 'Burgh

Mar 31, 2007 20:38

Last night, I squeezed in to catch Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (aka the Yarn Harlot) signing and promoting her new book, "Cast-On" at our local Joseph-Beth Booksellers. It was a juggle because none of my babysitters were available and Michael was stuck in DC traffic. But, it all turned out really well!

The bookstore manager, Rich, was very accomodating for us. He took me and Jana up to the balcony, mostly because there was no room in the main floor area. This worked out extremely well. We were in the children's area and they have a great children's section. So Jana was able to keep herself mostly entertained during the one hour talk.

I did recognize a few people and vice versa although I'm not really into the local knitting scene.

Even if you're not into knitting, you might enjoy the wit and humor of Stephanie's writing. She really captures the OCD in extreme hobbyists. In this case, knitting.

So brought her own digital camera and took snapshots before her talk. Look, that's me, the blue speck sitting on the balcony,

Jana was so good, I let her take home a new friend she became very attached to, a penguin we both named, "Loopy."

Anyway, she's just as great a speaker as she is a writer. And she handled her Q/A very well. It was a treat I was looking forward to and even Jana got a nice compliment from Stephanie for being so well behaved. (Jana was the only toddler there, but there were a number of babies around.)
