Richard Curtis on love and film

I just quickly looked up Richard Curtis. He's a guy whose name I always forget, even though I've seen (and loved) a lot of the films and television shows he's written.

Most recently this was The Boat that Rocked, which came out last year and is set in the 60s. Awesome soundtrack, btw, good for learning the 'old stuff' if you're a bit clueless like me.

Anyway, I was struck by this quote from the "more info" page about him:

If you write a story about a soldier going AWOL and kidnapping a pregnant woman and finally shooting her in the head, it's called searingly realistic, even though it's never happened in the history of mankind. Whereas if you write about two people falling in love, which happens about a million times a day all over the world, for some reason or another, you're accused of writing something unrealistic and sentimental.

film, writing, love
