I've found I like progress bars, even if my goal word count is a total shot in the dark.

I'm really quite sure this is the novel I want to be writing right now. I've put two other major projects away, and now it's much easier to focus. I may never get back to one of them, because I'm not sure it's a book I want to write so much as a book I want to have written, and I've mostly come to terms with that. The other I'll pick up again, if only because it's too near and dear to my heart not to finish it someday, but I've rewritten the first few chapters more than a dozen times without getting past 15k, and if that's not a sign, I don't know what is. But this one is my first novel. I have a real hold on my protagonist now, and the plot's falling right in line. And I've always wanted to set something in Oxford.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to find a pre-Franco-Prussian War map of Strasbourg.
