shell oil issued a warning, cautioning people to keep cell phones in cars while pumping gas. several people have picked up phone calls while pumping gas, and the energy emitted from the ringing can be enough to light the gas fumes. people have been burned. it's also happened while people have been talking on the phone and pumping gas ( Read more... )

It's actually b/c of the static electricity that can happen. That's why they also tell you to touch your car when you get out of it but before pumping so as to discharge any static electricity you may have.

I'm fully scared of blowing up - so I never talk on my phone when pumping gas... god knows I don't need any other catastrophes in my life hahahah.
