what's this, a real post?

I've been having a DAY, flist, so I'm breaking my non-essential internet sort-of-moratorium to bring you a post! With content! Or at least links to other people's content. Better than nothing, yes?

First, via cofax7, a really awesome post on Why Strong Female Characters are Bad for Women: I think the major problem here is that women were clamoring for “strong female characters,” and male writers misunderstood. They thought the feminists meant [Strong Female] Characters. The feminists meant [Strong Characters], Female.

So the feminists shouldn’t have said “we want more strong female characters.” They should have said “we want more WEAK female characters.” Not “weak” meaning “Damsel in Distress.” “Weak” meaning “flawed.”

Yes. Just...so very, very much yes!!!

It may seem strange, in light of the skepticism that post places on "strong female characters," for my next rec to be laurashapiro's awesome Kara Thrace/Aeryn Sun mash-up vid (to Joan Osborne!). Yet I think we can all agree that Kara Thrace and Aeryn Sun are both "strong" and "flawed" in the best senses of both words, and the vid is hot and awesome, and I'm always impressed when people manage to pull off mash-up sex scenes between two characters who were, y'know, not actually on the same show.

But you know who else is a Strong Character, Female, yet SO does not get enough credit for it? Anastasia Dualla. And beccatoria, as part of a vid war she's doing with chaila43 (vid wars! everybody wins, omg!), has just made a really stunning Dee vid (it's the second; you also get a great D'Anna vid in that link, as well: two! two vids for the price of one!).

Here's what I have always adored about Dee: Dee made her own damned choices. Sometimes those choices hurt other people, and sometimes they hurt her, and sometimes they were maybe more about the men in her life than I might have preferred, but Dee had agency. Even what happened in the end: that was her choice in a way that it wasn't for anyone else. And Becka does a great job capturing Dee's agency here, in the big and small things Dee did. In her relationships with Billy and Lee, in the way she committed mutiny and helped steal an election and held the fleet together with the power of her voice. Dee doesn't get enough love, and especially not enough vid love, and this is the vid she deserves.

And now I should probably go crawl back into my work hole. Things do progress. Hopefully I'll be more or less back by sometime in April.
