1. I'm not at all a fan of the part where I have to wear socks and mid-weight coats in late May. Why so cold?!?!?!
2. I continue to be hopelessly behind on everything unrelated to the class I'm teaching. And just barely on time on everything that is related to the class.
3. I did, however, finish season 1 of Bones!
After watching around at random for a little bit (I saw most of the back half of season 4, then random highlight eps from other seasons--the first Gravedigger one, the schmoopy Christmas one where they kiss, the one where Zack is a serial killer, etc.), I figured I should go back and start from the beginning and see things in order. I'm not sure it really makes that much of a difference, to be honest, because I don't see much in the way of character development. Booth and Brennan had exactly as much UST in early season 1 as they seem to have later on, Brennan is possibly more socially awkward in season 4 than in season 1 (which doesn't make much sense, but I don't really care), and they're all very adorkable, and I continue to love the show.
Season 1 has a much more serious tone, overall, which isn't to say that it isn't also lighthearted, but it doesn't make fun of itself in quite the same way--doesn't relish its cliches with a knowing wink in the way it does later on. And despite the fact that most fans of the show seem to prefer the earlier tone and feel the show has lost something in much of season 4, I think I prefer the self-indulgent, let's-not-take-ourselves-too-seriously feel of season 4 (which was what hooked me on the show in the first place). I am not at all inclined to take this show seriously, myself, and I prefer it when it doesn't take itself seriously, either.
Nevertheless, the more serious character eps do have a strong pull. I really love the way they develop the "what happened to Brennan's parents?" arc throughout season 1, and even though I already knew what happened and was afraid the onscreen payoff wouldn't be worth it, I was very pleasantly surprised by the season finale.
I also LOVE that Brennan is the center of the show. I mean, it's very much about Brennan and Booth's partnership, and the actors get co-credit in the opening credits, yet it's still her story primarily. The girl is the hero, and the guy is the sidekick, and this is just SO REFRESHING!!!! And she's awesome (and so is he), and I love them a lot. In case that had not yet become evident. :P
Question: is Brennan supposed to have Asperger's? I've very much been reading her that way--she reminds me a lot of the people I know who have Asperger's or are elsewhere on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum--but I was curious whether this was a deliberate creative choice or just how I'm reading her.
And now it will be on to season 2. And the advent of Cam!!! I've missed her in season 1.
4. Although I'm not as much of a shipper as some folks, I certainly have been known to have strong pairing proclivities from time to time, so I'll play with the pairing meme that's been going around. I'm picking the version that asks for 10 rather than 15, because I'm not so sure I could come up with 15!
Name your 10 absolutely favorite couples (het/slash/canon/fanon) and ask people to see what trends they notice about your couples. Try to pick different fandoms.
More or less in order of devotion:
1. Mulder/Scully - The X-Files (The pairing to which I compare all other pairings! Always first place.)
2. John/Aeryn - Farscape
3. Booth/Brennan - Bones (Their third-place status may only be temporary, but infatuations are infatuations!)
4. Elliot/Olivia - Law and Order: SVU
5. Daniel/Janet - Stargate: SG-1
6. Susan/Talia - Babylon 5
7. Kira/Odo - Star Trek: DS9
8. Bruce/Amy - Judging Amy
9. Janeway/Chakotay - Star Trek: Voyager
10. Sarah/Ellison - Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
I'm not sure those are actually my 10 absolutely favorite pairings, but they're the ones I come up with when I 1) don't repeat fandoms, 2) exclude non-romantic pairs and 3) exclude certain pairings I used to care about until frakking Ron Moore ruined them. Trends I notice myself? Lots of smart, ass-kicking women, a strong though not exclusive proclivity for pairings in the Mulder/Scully model, and a double-dose of Richard T. Jones. :)
