Five Conversations Janet Fraiser and Cameron Mitchell Never Had (SG-1)

Jul 02, 2008 23:25

Only one five things response for today. cnidarian asked for five conversations between Janet Fraiser and Cam Mitchell. As I had always suspected, it turns out that my two favorite SG-1 characters are pretty much made of awesome together. Spoilers throughout seasons 9 and 10 and for "Ark of Truth," though it's also obviously AU from "Heroes" (but the same ( Read more... )

Cam likes a shortening-based pie crust. It's the way his grandmother makes hers, and it's a good, all-purpose pie crust. Nice and flaky, complements but doesn't overpower the pie.

OMG I LOVE YOU! I LOVE THAT YOU GET THIS! Then, as I was nodding and agreeing while reading the passage I remembered, "Oh. Of course. She's a Southern girl. SOUTHERNERS know food." I'm not from what Southerners would consider The South, but culturally, and food-wise? Southern Illinois is the South...and Northern Illinois lets us know that at every turn...and they have the weirdness of not knowing basic food facts, of not knowing that the trees turn their leaves over to supplicate for rain and tell you it'll rain, of not knowing common sense things and how to jury-rig something and how to drive a car till the baling wire fails as well..

Lovely. I like Four best of all, I think. (After the pie.)

...And can I have your oil-based pie crust recipe? I'd like to try cobbler out of that, as it NEVER turns out right with the fantastic shortening pie

Dude, pie is serious business! ;) And I love how even though there's no basis at all for thinking of Janet as a Southerner (because aside from that one line back in season 1 when she's imitating her ex, her accent is pretty solidly Canadian), it seems to be a lot of people's personal canon for her. It's mine, anyway: not Deep South, but a border state--Kentucky (which is where I'm from, incidentally) or Missouri or rural Maryland or something like that. And no way is Cameron from Kansas--canon screwed that one up. He's a Southern boy if I ever saw one! So yes, I think they would both know their pie ( ... )

Yeah; Janet and Teryl read as Southern to me too--and I totally agree on the Kentucky (parts of which are farther north than where I'm from) or Maryland or the Ozarks (where Don Davis was from, "Hammond of Texas" notwithstanding). And, yeah, Ben can't be anything OTHER than a Southern Boy. I CAN see Cameron as "from Kansas"...on a technicality: his family are from the deep south, he grew up in rural Kansas (always more southern-ish than anywhere urban), and visited family in, say, Alabama/Mississippi/Carolinas often (/wank ( ... )

One explanation for Cam's background that I remember seeing at some point (and maybe this was synecdochic, who seems to be something of a fannish authority in such matters) was lots of Southern family and roots, complete with frequent visits, but because his father was in the military, they moved around a lot. And maybe they were stationed in Kansas when Cam was in high school (are there AF bases in Kansas? I have no idea), and his parents decided to stay. My own grandparents were originally from Kentucky and Tennessee but ended up settling in New Mexico thanks to the USAF, so it happens ( ... )

Each of these were lovely. I miss Janet, so I'm glad you got her and Cam together to talk. :)

Thank you! Janet and Cam are my two favorite characters, overall, and I like them for many of the same reasons, I think. So yes, I think it's a crying shame they never met one another, and I had rather a lot of fun throwing them in a room together to see what would happen. I now sort of want to invent an entire AU based on the premise that she was there for the last three seasons.

Far be it from me to not shake my pompoms and encourage you like mad after reading these. :D

Oh, these are nice. I'm getting strong hints of Syn's Cam here, with all the cooking references.

As for pies, I like a mixed crust of butter and shortening: flaky but flavorful. Or the CI crust, which is absurd amounts of butter but tastes fantastic. That's for sweet pies, though, not savory ones.

Thank you! And I think it's hard to resist the cooking references when the character bakes canonically! My personal canon for Janet is that she's also from the South originally (despite Teryl Rothery's Canadian accent). I think they'd both realize that pie is serious business!

And mmm, mixed butter and shortening. That I might have to try. I must admit that I self-inserted as Cassie here: my mother's oil-based pie crust is fabulous, but I have a hell of a time making it work. But shortening-based alone isn't moist enough for my taste.

Wheee! This is fab! PIE!!! hee
And hints of a Dan/Jan past!

The bit about Janet in part 4, being a cornerstone. Lovely. Such a shame she wasn't kept on for later seasons. When she died the whole base must have missed her something chronic.

Man, an expanded version would be very very cool.

Yay! I'm glad you liked them! (And thanks for the rec--wow!)

And oh, how I wish we'd gotten Janet in the later seasons!!!!!! She would have been pretty fabulous with the new team, I think. *sniffle*

As for more of this 'verse, I have ideas percolating. No idea if they'll go anywhere, but it is fun to be back in an SG-1 frame of mind for the first time in ages!

We're glad to have you back, no matter how temporary it might be!

I had to come back and read this again, take it in better. And this sentence in particular: Janet pulled a chair between her patients' beds, held Jackson's hand, and slept

...made me sort of "see" that ep with, like, an overhead projector sheet over it, with this AU printed on. Everything there, just with Janet added in. If that makes sense.

Also, your comment further down about Vala sometimes annoying the snot out of Janet... *snort*

Thank you again for this!!
