It belatedly occurred to me that I'd better check visa requirements to Turkey; I'd simultaneously forgotten that I am not European and neither as yet is Turkey. It turns out I will need one, but thankfully it is available for $26 (cash) at the airport. Otherwise, given that visas take up to three working days to process and I'm leaving on Thursday ( Read more... )

We needed Turkey visas for a tenner at the airport when we went to Istanbul last year too: I got the impression it was more or less a handy foreigner tax.

Oh good. Proof that westerners can visit Turkey and not be smitten by the bird flu, terrorists and earthquakes announced in various online travel guides. All I wanted to know was what kind of plug adaptor to bring for the camera batteries...

My only handy tip: don't bother with lira, take dollars, euros or pounds if you plan to do any shopping. Seemed like everyone would rather have those anyway, and they don't devalue as you look at them.

The above was in response to members of my flist having visited Turkey, of course.

For some reason, Germans, Swiss and Austrians are exempt from the handy foreigner tax. Possibly because they have so many Turks there.
