Oh, you picked the hardest fic for me to explain *g* I still don't quite know if I believe in this characterization of them, but I was proud of it nonetheless because it was difficult for me to explore and I liked the way it turned out in the end.
What we have here is two different concepts of true love - I'd been thinking about how Bill is always so adamant that he wants to find it while Tom seems so determined that's not possible, and I wondered if that might have to do with their different concepts of their relationship. It's not that Tom doesn't believe in true love, he just doesn't believe you get to have it more than once, and his relationship with Bill is, to him, the one true thing. I suppose I see him blurring the lines between their brotherly relationship and romantic love a lot here, not because he's necessarily attracted to Bill in that way, but because Tom has a hard time differenciating between several 'shades' of love whereas Bill seems more in touch with that concept. To him, his feelings for Tom exist above and beyond anything else, and what he calls 'love' is more of a 'normal person' emotion than their twinly bond could ever be.
So yeah, they're bound to misunderstand each other here, and the funny thing is that it's because they're both speaking nothing but the honest truth - which can be a very different thing to two different people, even two as close as twins.
Stylistically, I am quite fond of this whole fic even if it was highly experimental and there are probably a million things that don't work. Present tense is always a gamble, and there's a lot of imagery in this that I'm not sure meshes completely with Tom's 'voice' as I usually write it, but the writing itself kinda took priority to me in this - I just wanted to write something pretty :) I hope it works.
