I'm thinking about planning a canoe/kayak trip (whichever you prefer), most likely in the U.P. This would include about 3 days or so on the river, camping out along the way. The drive is about six hours to Manistique, which is a good beginner spot and a beautiful area. The trip would probably be later in the summer to avoid mosquitoes.
A little blurb about the river from
http://www.uppermidwest.net/PaddlingMichiganKayakCanoe.html MANISTIQUE RIVER (Schoolcraft County; 65 miles, 3-4 days)
On this trip, paddle all the way from Germfask to Manistique through generally wide and slow waters. No portages. Two campgrounds are found along the way; one at Mead Creek, soon after the trip begins, and the other at Merwin Creek 40 miles farther downstream. However, public land borders much of the river, offering numerous possible campsites. In fall, this is a particularly beautiful float. From late May through July, flies and mosquitoes are bothersome.
Let me know what you think - this defnitely isn't set in stone. Plans for a less-primitive camping weekend will be coming soon.
