Go Straight Ahead

I had a discussion with a colleague tonight about my lifestyle. This discussion was spurred by my admission that I'm now abstaining from the consumption of caffeinated drinks. I wanted to perhaps get some feedback on the topic. Is Straight Edge dogmatic? Is the pursuit of an ideal that has a set of central tenets equivalent to the narcotic effect of religion? I don't think so. I think Straight Edge is sign of progress toward independence. I'm independent of the effects and questionable motivation behind substance use/abuse. I guess he thinks I don't drink or smoke or do drugs because I want to be Straight Edge. I'm Straight Edge because I don't want to drink or smoke or do drugs. I'm by no means Mr. fucking Hardline over here, beating the shit out of people for drinking milk or smoking Pall Malls. I don't really give a fuck what people do with their lungs/livers/etc. I just don't want to do that to mine. I don't understand why people have such a problem with that. It's really not that hard to comprehend. For being as judgemental a person as I am, I'm surprisingly respectful of others' lifestyle choices. Sometimes I wish people would show me the same respect.
