On one hand, Spencer understood where Mary was coming from. The fact that Rhys and Eden had essentially eloped would have caused a media frenzy. On the other hand, he understood why Rhys and Eden had gotten married in private. If Mary was acting this hostile towards Rhys in public, he could only imagine what she was like behind closed doors.
But that was Rhys and Eden's battle to fight, not his. He was told that everything had to be 'hands off' and he was going to try very hard to listen to that rule. Besides, it's not like Eden was a horrible person for Rhys to be married to. Far from it. He was pretty sure they'd be okay.
He had to give Mary silent props though. The props needed to be silent because Mary refused to look him in the eye; refused to even acknowledge his existence. Whatever. Silent props to Mary because she managed to arrange a public wedding between her daughter and his son in less than two weeks. A church, a cake, champagne, dinner, photographer, the works. Granted, there weren't that many guests; only the very immediate family, but still. Everything had gone off without a hitch.
And then Goopy stood up. "Best Man's speech!" he said with a grin on his face.
Everyone looked at each other. Uh-oh. It appeared that there was one thing Mary forgot about. Rhys didn't have a Best Man. Rhys and Eden had been married in Three Lakes. Whoever had signed their marriage certificate had witnesses on hand. Obviously those strangers weren't at the public ceremony.
He and Vaughn, the only other family member that Rhys was allowed to invite, shared a quick glance. Someone had to say something!
Without thinking about it, Spencer stood up and raised his glass. He noticed Mary's lips thin. He also noticed Rhys' eyes narrow. Obviously Spencer would not have been his choice for Best Man. But he was already standing. He shrugged inwardly and grinned.
"To Rhys and Eden. May you have many long years of happiness. Oh, and Eden? Welcome to the Fitzhugh Family. Prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile."
It was worth seeing Rhys laugh and raise his glass in return. Everyone toasted the happy couple. He heard Mary say, "Eden is a Devereaux, not a Fitzhugh!" But nobody replied.
Whoops. It sounded like Mary hadn't seen the marriage certificate. The one that Eden had signed as 'Eden Devereaux-Fitzhugh.'
Yeah. It was going to be interesting, and hard, to watch everything play out over the next few decades. But Rhys and Eden both looked happy. That's all that really mattered in the end.
He hoped.
