I finished listening to the last two books in Isaacs Asimov's Foundation trilogy, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation. I enjoyed them and recommend them although I did see some largish plot holes. But I went along for the ride, helped by the fact that Scott Brick is a terrific audio reader.
I think I read these 30-some years ago and remembered particularly how hysterically funny I found the first part of Second Foundation, where the daughter gets the best of the spy. I think my sense of humor has changed a lot because I only found it mildly amusing.
Foundation and Empire contains two stories. The first is of a very smart general who tries to take over the Foundation. The second story is the rise of the Mule, a mutant, which was not forseen by Hari Seldon.
Second Foundation is the story of how the First Foundation is relying on the Second Foundation to save it, direct it, thus stifling the natural direction of the reborn civilization. So the Second Foundation has to be "found" by The Mule's minions and destroyed.
I guess these are classics in SF and I can see why. They're entertaining, quick reads.
I was suprised to find there were lots of sequels to this trilogy and even prequels. I'll have to see if they're available in audio.
