Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones - audio

Howl's Moving Castle read by Jenny Sterlin.

Sterling does quite a good job, as always.

I read this years ago, so this is a re-read.   It was completely fresh for me because I'd forgotten almost everything, which is kind of scary.

I haven't read much of DWJ, but from the few books of hers I've read, I notice that like Martha Wells, she doesn't repeat herself.   Her stories are fresh and inventive.  No tired tropes.  Didn't know where it was going or how it would end (besides happily).

A wicked witch casts a powerful spell on Sophie, making her old.  She's aghast and runs away from home.  She ends up sleeping at the Wicked Wizard Howl's moving castle.   She needs a place to stay so decides that she will be useful by cleaning up his filthy house, hoping that will cause Howl to allow her to stay there.  She does end up staying, but only because of Howl's indolence, because her cleaning efforts are not appreciated.

Lots of bad stuff and conflict with several romances ending quite happily.

This book was lots of fun.  More than Howl or Sophie, my favorite character was the fire demon.  Stirlin did a really nice job on his voice.

book review, re-read, ya, audio
