I live in Jackson, Tennessee. For those who have been able to watch US national news lately, yes, that Jackson, TN...
Was out of internet access for 32 hours - just got power again at 9:30 pm Wed. night, too tired to go online... so sorry for not letting y'all know sooner what our situation here is.
Yes, we're fine. Our house suffered only a broken double window pane in the kitchen when a stone shot through - stuff thrown off the deck... debris all over the yard, BUT...
Houses only about 7-8 doors away from me were destroyed. Probably 10 houses on Windale destroyed and a swath of houses up side street Addison Way destroyed. We BARELY got missed by the edge of the tornado that hit Union University which is only a mile from me. This was indeed bad here... and we were VERY lucky, not even a roof shingle gone. Both of our banks heavily damaged. A whole bunch of physician's clinics behind Regional Hospital heavily damaged, and that's just a couple blocks from me. Just lots of bad damage all over the place and other places untouched. Huge metal power poles bent over along the Bypass. I had no power since 7 pm Tuesday. Even cell phone service was spotty on Wednesday. Police have controlled access into our neighborhood since Tuesday evening and all through Wednesday.
The tornado hit FAST! One moment starting to get mobilized to go into the bathroom for shelter, then power cut out just as I was getting Bella (my dog) in there, then crashing noises that sounded like hail breaking through windows and a loud, angry WHINE that was the tornado. Terrible noise! I had candles in the bathroom and my cell phone, but hadn't gotten a radio yet. A friend called me just then and kept me informed of what radio was saying about what was happening. I couldn't get a radio until it sounded quiet outside, then I left Bella inside the bathroom and went to investigate. Expected to see glass all over, but only mostly tiny glass shards on kitchen floor which I wasn't able to clean up until daylight, so I put up gates to keep the dog out of there. Hunkered down with the radio in the great room after that until back in the bathroom as the last storm was going to roll through, but fortunately only wind and rain with that. Although things had died down by midnight, sirens, helicopters, and my nerves kept me awake until 2 am. Bad night, folks!
Can't sleep right now... still all nerves. My husband came home from KY and got here by 5 pm Wednesday to get our generator running so we could save the stuff in the fridge and get some heat before the cold weather returned.
This was too close. The Goddess saved us for something, that's for sure! Thanks for all your good wishes. I have never been this close to devastation like this, and never been in a situation where I couldn't contact people or get most media. (Our house phone is cable, so that was out, too.)
Peace, y'all.
