The sound of waves crashing on the shore brings Jin memories of his childhood. He’s been here twice, maybe thrice, he can’t remember anymore. It’s been so long since he’s been here. White fine sand, cerulean waters, the wind that sometimes slaps him on the face, still laced with the scent of salt. Okinawa is both familiar and foreign to him.

The sun is high in the sky, the breeze soothing his skin and the sand warm beneath his feet. He knows this feeling. He likes this even if he still fears the water sometimes. Inside him still lies that child who is afraid to swim alone in the sea. Jin wonders if he’ll ever be brave enough to wade in the water like most children do.

It doesn’t take long for Jin to see him.

Kame looks happy while riding the waves on his surfboard. Jin has seen him do that too many times before. Seeing Kame with a bright smile plastered on his face makes him want to forget everything and just stare at Kame. He’s seen Okinawa and felt its magic once, twice with Kame. He doesn’t know if this trip will allow him to relive that feeling.

It was Nakamaru’s idea to meet up and have fun together. “It’s not like we’re enemies, Jin” Maru said to him and Jin easily agreed to go. Besides, it's been a year since he last went out with Kame.

It’s summer and yet, this particular beach in Okinawa remains quiet. Maybe Johnny owns this place or maybe, that rich guy they visited for a CTKT special does. Jin doesn’t really know. All he knows right now is he’s anxious and excited and worried. He doesn’t know how Koki and Kame would welcome him.

Kame doesn’t even know he’s here.

Koki is grinning wide when he sees him and Jin stumbles a little when Koki comes to hug him. Koki is wet against him and Jin could feel the sea water soaking his shirt and some parts of his short pants. He doesn’t plan to stay. He told Nakamaru he couldn’t stay because…well, just because. He isn’t up for anything awkward or anything like that. Still, Jin couldn’t find it in him to push Koki away because it’s Koki. Everyone knows how much he has disappointed Koki when he left. All is good now, Jin thinks as he pats Koki’s back with his hand.

“There’s a spare towel in my bag. It’s the black Prada next to Ueda’s.”

Jin is doubtful that he heard right. Koki then pulls away to show him where the bags are lined up before he follows Kame who is now setting his surfboard down on the side of the cottage. They both sit across Ueda and start eating. Jin then finds himself smiling and he playfully kicks Taguchi on the back of his knee when he comes close, before walking off to where the bags are. The sun is still high up in the sky, glaring, and yet, Jin only feels the gentle cold breeze of the wind on his skin as he searches for the towel inside the bag.

His heart swells when he sees some of his clothes inside Kame’s bag. When the sun comes down, Jin decides to go for a swim with his friends.

As the night deepens, Jin still can’t gather up the courage to say goodbye, not when he’s having such a good time. It’s been so long since he last heard Kame being so chatty, so long since he last heard Ueda tell Junno off harshly. It’s been so long since he last felt how it is to be one with this group. There’s no hate between them now, only forgiveness, understanding and acceptance. It’s a miracle, Jin thinks but then again, they are KAT-TUN. They work fine like that.

Jin stares at the bonfire in front of him, drinks his beer and stares at it again. It looks fascinating tonight and when he looks up, he can’t help but smile as he sees the flames dancing on Kame’s skin. Kame looks beautiful bathed in the orange glow of the fire and he’s laughs as Koki and Nakamaru fool around. He could hear Junno and Ueda laughing as well but Jin keeps his undivided attention on Kame. Kame has changed. A lot. But there’s still that air of familiarity that makes Jin feel at home. It’s as if he has never caused Kame any hurt before. It’s as if he never left and ditched Kame. It only makes him feel more guilty.

“I’m going for a walk.” Kame then says, dusting sand off his shorts once he’s straightened himself up.

“Can I…go with you?” Jin asks hesitantly and he grows a bit nervous when all the guys look at him as if he said something so foreign that their minds couldn’t register any word.

“Of course you can, Jin.” Kame replies after a minute and Jin lets out a shaky laugh.

It makes Jin want to cry when he realizes that Kame said his name.

Jin takes his time. He feels the water lapping at his feet, the strong waves are terrifying but their sounds soothe him. He looks up and the night sky greets him; he sees the moon round and bright against the dark-coloured canvas. The moonlight paints Kame’s hair silver and it makes the sea glisten. The moonlight just makes Kame more beautiful. They walk in silence and Jin doesn’t know how or why but he’s content like this, just being with Kame and feeling the sand beneath his feet. It feels like the world is happier tonight.

"Hey, Jin."  Kame calls out softly as they’re both walking along the edge of the water. Jin’s walking behind him slowly, taking everything in his own pace. Jin has always been like that anyway and Kame doesn’t feel the need to hurry him up.

“Hmm?”

"Do you feel…better?" Kame seems unsure of what words to use. “Do you feel better now that you’re living your dream? Happier?”

"I am." Jin finds himself saying. “But I don’t really know.”

"Oh."

"There's one thing I do know though." Jin then ignores the nagging feeling inside of him as he finds Kame’s hand in the dark and holds it gently, "And that is that I missed you. I missed being with you, Kame.” He yearned to have Kame this close once again.

"Why are you saying that?” Kame asks. Jin always takes him by surprise and well, Jin is Jin. Jin has always been like this to him ever since Jin first asked him to kiss him inside the tent they put up somewhere here in Okinawa during their junior days.

"I’m just keeping it real, Kame.” Jin says as he tightens his grip on Kame’s hand. “I’m sorry I had to go. I’m sorry I had dreams as big as this sea. My dreams are never-ending but I never wanted to leave the group. You know how special KAT-TUN is to me.” You know how special you are to me.

Kame then turns around to face Jin who is now looking sad and a bit regretful. It makes his heart ache for Jin. He knows how much Jin loved the group it’s just that Jin grew up and his preferences changed. It isn’t right to hold him back just because KAT-TUN needs him. Just because Kame needs him.

“I know, Jin, I know.” Kame says just in time as the waves die down on the shore. “But you’ll be okay. We are all doing okay. We understand already so you don’t have to worry.”

“Sometimes, I wish we could go back to the past.” Jin whispers. “I just want us to be normal again. This is hard, Kame.“

“Jin, you’re normal. We’re normal.” Kame replies. He looks up to the sky, swallows, and looks at Jin’s face again. “We’re just our own kind of normal, that’s all.”

Jin finds the smile that lifts Kame’s cheeks up adorable and sweet and when his eyes focus on those thin lips, Jin tugs on Kame’s hand and pulls him close. He kisses Kame like he’s never kissed him before. Kame stiffens in his arms but then relaxes after at least three waves have kissed their feet and Jin could only sigh when Kame takes control. Jin tightens his arms around Kame and he feels one of Kame’s hands buried in his hair, grasping, and the other on the small of his back, just drawing small circles that makes a shiver run down his spine. Jin never would have thought he’d cling onto Kame as if Kame’s his lifeline.

Sometimes, Jin thinks he is over Kame. Often, Jin knows he is in love with Kame.

There is nothing like the feeling of warm arms wrapped around his body, warming him up, making Jin feel safe, and comfortable. It’s as if those arms would keep his overwhelming worries and troubles out of his chest and throw it out to the sea. They both laugh when Jin pulls away and tackles Kame to the sand. The waves die down and wash over them as they laugh like they did before when they were still juniors, staying overnight by the sea. Kame rolls them over and Jin swallows a laugh when Kame kisses him deeply. He allows Kame to steal his breath and Kame takes him until they’re both on the edge. Their relationship has always been like this. Uncertain. But there's always a routine in their lives that they both follow.

Kame is his routine. His beauty and his beast. Jin is Kame’s routine. His past and his present. Maybe even his future.
