I wish I was Canadian

So the Sloan show at the 40Watt last night was wonderful. The opening band were pretty awful, but that seems to be a trend these days. Dewey drove over from Atlanta for the show because he's a big fan boy for Sloan and they appear to be snubbing ATL on this tour. I was telling him that "Snowsuit Sound" from Twice Removed is my favorite Sloan song and he was saying.."well, we'll find Jay and ask him to play it." I had gone to the john and when I returned Dewey was talking to Jay. Jay's comment was "no way..that song's in a weird register..is there anything else you would like to hear" to which I replied "anything from Twice Removed..that album has good memories for me. He agreed to "Hate My Generation", not my favorite song on the record, but hey..what can you say.

During the show, they played "Penpals", "Hate My Generation" and "People of the Sky"..I was happy. I'm not really too familiar with much of their music besides the first two albums, so the rest was just bonus tracks for me, but I recognized songs from Navy Blues and One Chord to Another and the new album. For the encore they decided that since they'd never played Athens before they'd do a sort of request jukebox verse/chorus thing..including "Underwhelmed", "I am the Cancer", "Coax Me"...and....."Snowsuit Sound"!!!! I was a bouncing 20 year old all over again.

My favorite Sloan memory is back in 92 (or was it 93) when they were touring with the Lemonheads. They played an in-store at the record store in Alabama where I worked. It was poorly attended, but they had fun. That day Chris turned me on to Swell..and the rest is history. Later that night they blew the Lemonheads off the stage, but E Dando was so smacked up that Labradford could have rocked harder than him that night.

Brett was there along with a beauty named Marilyn from Newfoundland who LOVES Sloan and had never seen them live. Fan girls are cute.

Sloan are probably the most underappreciated pop band around...and yes they are Canadian, damnit!!!
