Six hours across the country and twelve--LJ, turn down your music. Do you wanna go deaf?--and they've stopped at some little middle-of-nowhere diner inside Missouri and LJ's still pretty sure that his mother's been replaced by a pod person (Probably Adrian's fault) because the real her would never decide that a cross country trip in a Mercedes would be fun.
He's got his headphones over his ears, not because he's listening to music, but because he's been trapped in a car with these two mooks for the past six hours. He's sure not talking to them if he has a chance. The diner's got some weird Texan theme, what with the dead cow heads all over the place and the giant Texas shaped sign outside, that puts LJ on an edge, thinking about movies with cannibal southerners and if that waitress calls him 'Chillin' one more time, he is taking the butter knife to his throat.
LJ stirs his ketchup with a rogue crispy fry, and glances over at the booth next door, behind Adrian. Two guys, side by side, newspapers spread out in front of them in a sea of black and white, articles circled in red. He catches words on the stale diner air, words like, "possession", "violet death", "suicide", and "haunted".
LJ thinks of Psycho and turns his Walkman on, blaring the volume until his mother glares and asks him if he wants to go deaf.
