They found Georgia Lee dead in a small grove of trees one cold night in November. She’d been missing for three days and the last anybody ever saw of her was one man who said he’d seen her walking down the street all alone. God should have been watching, he said sadly. Her mother Ida shook her head and said she had tried to stop Georgia from running away but children were so hard to raise good these days. The man patted her back and said he was awful sorry about the whole thing and she invited him over for something to eat and he said Thank you ma’am but I really must be getting on I’m awful sorry and she replied That’s alright Mr. Bagwell, you drop by any time.
Close your eyes and count to ten, the man said to Georgia Lee. We’ll play a game and I’ll go hide, but I want you to find me so we can play all over again. And Georgia Lee agreed it was a very good idea and shut her eyes in the cornfield as the crows flew by and the toads croaked in the witch grass. And when she had gotten up to ten she opened her eyes but the man was still standing there, and she laughed at him because he wasn't hiding, and somewhere far away on an old porch a baby began to cry for her mommy, and after the girl stopped laughing and the baby stopped crying it was silent for a long time.
