What’s a Grendel Baby?
… an experimental ensemble inspired by the classical, the vaudevillian, swing, and beyond. Expect Grendel Babies to theatrically stir you in their musical narrative pot, with songs drawing from medieval lais, fairy tales, day-to-day (dis)contents, and randomly discovered notes from wronged exes (among other curios).
Once upon a time, in the year of two thousand and eight, on a wine night, in the catacombs of a university, Grendel bore two babies. The babies grew up, Clawing-keys and Screeching-fiddles. What a delight! And then that tragic accident. Poor daddy lost his head.
Determined to explore the otherworld, the babies left the dearest catacomb home behind. You do not do, you do not do, they said. They did not shed a tear. On the road of Vau de Chambre, meeting dragons and fairies, werewolves and vampires, wives and knights, leeks and pears, and good trout, how exciting!
Then two years later, appeared another, Strings-a-wailing, in their image. What a sweet red cap! Who is your father? they asked, despite knowing. Do you follow? So they continued their journey, the three of them now.
One day, this Grendel baby went to the market, this Grendel baby went to the store, this Grendel baby went to New York. On the road appeared another, Banging-drums. Are you a siren? Who is your father? they asked, despite knowing. And they danced.
