FIC: "Necessary Force" Part 3 (JLA) (2nd half)

Oct 28, 2007 21:39

Hoy, all!

So, here's the second half of Part 3 of The Epic - sorry it took a week to work out the kinks and get it posted.  I've been dreadfully sick with cold and fever, and my poor brain and body ached too much to much revising or rushing to the library to get some online time.  Thanks for your patience, my friends!
I'm afraid I shall be having to ( Read more... )

Very good second half, Pax! :)

I like to see all the strategizing and how Clark is still not 100%, and only Bruce and J'onn really know it (possibly Diana). The foreshadowing! :)

Good description of Clark's disguise, and I knew they would have to disguise those distinctive, beautiful eyes! :)

Can't wait to see Clark infiltrate the evil lair! Bwahahahah!!

I echo your Bwahahaha! I'm rather looking forward to getting that part done myself. (I'm so evil to poor Clark!)

Yes, you nailed it: Bruce and J'onn and Diana are a bit more discerning about Superman's condition than he is precisely comfortable with. (and I don't think he is truly aware of just how much Bruce and Diana actually know.) Oh yes, I love playing with foreshadowing in writing! It's far too much fun. Thank you for noting that!

I'm so glad you like the disguise description. Man, I wrote that bit so long ago but I remember how enjoyable it was to try and visualize exactly how the disguise would appear. (plus it gave me the very transparent excuse to describe Superman's looks! Hee.) And yep! He really DOES have distinctive and beautiful eyes, doesn't he? (I'm glad it's not just me who thinks so!)

Thanks so much for your wonderful responses and enthusiasm, Brady!

And Happy Hallowe'en to you!

Clark is so used to being invulnerable that he's uncomfortable with showing signs of weakness.

I often slip in bits of foreshadowing in my writing, too. Love foreshadowing! :)

Oohhhh...!

A wonderful chapter! I really love how everyone interacts in this! So awesome. :)

“Sometimes it’s like those two have a language all their own,” Flash answered, amused. “Especially when they’re arguing. Steel refers to it as ‘la langue fine du monde.’”

“Excusez-moi?” Kyle asked, mystified.

“’World’s Finest Lingo',” Diana translated

I prefer to call it flirting. ;)

I'm really glad to see that there will be more next week sometime! :)

Yes, I'll do my best after slogging through a homework assignment and the horrible spectre of Report Cards. (talk about a Hallow'een Horror!)

Thanks so much for your wonderful response and encouraging enthusiasm on the story thus far. Means a lot! Yes, the character interactions are a HUGE part of what attracted me to attempting a story like this. I'm so happy to hear that part's working for you and some others! :-) There's quite a few heroes to handle, and I worry that I don't always get them all 'right', you know?

"I prefer to call it flirting.

LOL! Your remark gave me quite the chuckle, I must admit!

Thanks for liking the WF Lingo thing - I really do think they might have developed quite the shortcuts in their speech with each othe working with each other as often and as closely as they do. (even in canon!)

Thanks so much, StarsandSea, and Happy Hallow'een!

Another wonderful part of this epic story, Pax! I loved this even *more* than the last part, if that is possible. I'm so impressed with the perfect balance of relationships you have going on here, the wonderful dialogue and interplay between the characters. The attention to fleshing each out is amazing and so enjoyable. I can't believe you deprived us of this story for so long...

Bravo, Pax. This story continues to rock. More soon, pretty please. :))

Thank you for your gracious words, T, and you have no idea how I appreciate them. This long scene with all of the intense dialogue and interactions amongst the team I found truly a challenge to balance, (a fun one, though, to be sure) and I had fears that I wasn't always too successful with it. (Or than ANYone would actually be interested in reading it!) But that interplay is so much a part of what makes the JLA so damned COOL in the first place, n'est-ce pas? :-)

I can't believe you deprived us of this story for so long... Aww, thank you for saying that. The reasons for my long delay/sitting on it are myriad, and I must confess that part of me is still uncertain about the wisdom of sharing it - for a lot of reasons. (and I still need to work on its ending, the WIPpy old thing ...) So knowing it's enjoyed by a select few really helps. *beams*

Thanks again, and have a Happy Hallowe'en, T!

Pax :-)

Excellent! I love the notion of World's Finest Lingo, because Superman and Batman do have a unique understanding/relationship. They're the two who are on an equal footing together.

>>Superman cut his panicky tirade short, admonishing Batman with a look - and who else could get away with that?

LOL. Yep, Superman chastising Batman is a great image, especially when any hints of romance between the two are at this kind of subtle level--all implication.

I'm also glad you included the respect for Superman's disguise as Clark Kent; it's not just glasses, it's his whole attitude, and to have to pretend to be someone else that often takes a huge toll and is deserving of a lot of respect.

I'm also still loving the small revelations of Superman's weakness and the way Batman and J'onn are reacting to it. I can't wait for more!

Exactly! That's precisely what I've always felt about them, and indeed, a large part of what I was hoping to show in this story, so I'm so glad it seems to be coming out. Thank you!

Subtle implication is the most fun! And it's vastly entertaining to try and write bits that could be construed in some ways by gen readers and in ... certain other ways by slash fans.

Actually, being a fan of both kinds of relationships between the two myself, (yes, I love their friendship too, and sometimes the innocence of it strikes me with a great affection) it's wonderful to hear such a response.

Ah, Clark Kent, more than a disguise. It's him at his core. (not to say that the superhero or the alien are not equally important parts of him too! I love the Many Faces of Superman.) That's very observant of you to note that bit about his work when he leads the Clark part of his life. (especially as might notice that this ( ... )

“And you, of all of us, would not set off any sensor registers.”

Batman set his jaw, but made no reply.

Oooooh, I like this little touch of Diana's personality here. Not many people would mention Batman's non-meta status like that. :)

“Hello,” Superman interrupted. “I am still in the room, you know.”

*grin* I have a feeling this happens to him pretty often, actually, people discussing his stastus as if he were a piece of machinary--nothing personal, but it must get a bit annoying.

“He’s ‘da Man o’ Steel, the Big Red S, the Metropolis Marvel, the Big Blue Boy Scout, the Man of Tomorrow, yadda, yadda, yadda.” Superman sighed.

Once again, I have to mention your wonderful, deft hand between the comic and the mournful...Superman's sigh speaks volumes about the weight of those titles.

“You?” Aquaman snorted. “Eel O’Brian. Named for one of the most duplicitous creatures of the sea. And we’re going to trust you to watch our backs?”*squeals* That seems a perfect reference for Arthur! He wouldn't like an Eel at all ( ... )

Ah, Jen, what a lovely commentary. Thanks very much, and I'll be trying to do the same for the story you just sent me! (fabulous, by the way!*glee*)

Not many people would mention Batman's non-meta status like that. :)

No, I don't think many would either! But I've always felt that when push comes to shove, Diana isn't one to pull her punches. I've always liked that as diplomatic as she often is, she can also be refreshingly frank, and cut to the ... well, the truth of things ( ... )

*snugs comment-writing Wolf*

Of course, I didn't mean it quite so seriously in this particular exchange, but I think that must be a painful thing for him.

*grin* It comes off wonderfully light here and I think he cuts his friends a lot of slack (they are, after all, discussing tactics, and he's a big part of the tactics!) It's like being teased by your friends is entirely different from being teased by a stranger, and Superman's amused response captures that well.

(I am surprised you noticed this tiny bit amidst all else that was going on! Wow!)

Superman-woobie leaps off the screen at me! (I really like your other comments about how he's not really Clark here so much as Superman--even after all this time I struggle with what to call him when, and I think he's delightfully Superman here--disproving the idea that that's the least interesting of the different personalities rather soundly.)

I personally am not too certain I pulled that bit off as sharply as I would love, so thank you sincerely for saying what you did about it! ( ( ... )

Oh man, Jen, your dialogue is priceless!

Now, YOU've got to incorporate this into a fic of your own somehow! That's kind of you to say you think I did a good job of showing S and B's 'shorthand' communication, but really, you trumped me just in making this reply! It's an awesome tidbit! :-)

(I'm also sorry it took me so long to reply to this - I got so caught up in RL that I forgot I hadn't answered it! Forgive me?)

I too think that Superman would be the sort to cut his friends a lot of slack; he has always struck me as a hugely patient and very understanding sort of person. He sees into the heart of people uncannily well, I think. He's not omniscient, I'm not trying to say that, and there's plenty of times he can be as clueless as the next guy, but still, he's pretty intuitive, and I think with his friends he'd be even more magnanimous than even usual. :-)

Yeah, Superman-woobie leaps off at me too! :-)
