Someone linked me to this gem of a blog on OkCupid today:
"Republicans need not apply..."
Y'know, I wonder why so many women say that. I bet none of them have actually met a REAL Republican. I'm not talking about the neocons you see on the news, but the real conservatives who are the bread and butter of Middle America.
If you can't see past someone's politics, how do you expect to see the real person?
I think politics are pretty important, especially if you're so into them that you take the "The Are You Anti-Liberal Test" and score a whopping 89%. Even if neither party is really into politics, I think it's the sort of thing that could put a rift in a relationship.
Assuming that both people can ignore who the other person votes for, politics are still a fairly good indicator of personality. I'm sure I'll get people telling me that I'm stereotyping, but guess what, folks - a stereotype is what you call a statistic when it applies to a minority. If one of the first things a girl told me was that she was a hardcore republican, it would tell me two things - one, politics are very important to her, and two, she's more than likely conservative in her sociopolitical beliefs. I don't want to date that person, because it's likely that they'll disagree with me on any number of issues that are important to me. (Examples: Abortion, pumpkin-sex, the President, election processes, vegetarianism, and fantastic blowjobs.) Now, it's true, she could actually be my perfect match, but if I'm playing the odds - and I am - I'm not going to be very interested.
If I wanted to get to know every person, I wouldn't turn down 50 year old women, people wearing Nascar shirts and Confederate hats, or people who introduce themselves by punching me in the face.
My question to you, my vaguely faithful readers, is this: What non-physical characteristic in a person has totally turned you off to them in the past? If you've been too busy translating Ferengi fanfic into Klinzhai (obviously vastly superior to the canonical Klingon language, and more socioeconomically believable as well!), try to think of something that would turn you off to someone.
Godspeed to you, Captain. One day a girl will look beyond your political affiliation to the Seven of Nine figurine collection in your basement.
