Well, the moment has finally come, and I don't know how I feel about it.

Republican lawmakers are drafting new legislation that will make marriage a requirement for motherhood in the state of Indiana, including specific criminal penalties for unmarried women who do become pregnant "by means other than sexual intercourse ( Read more... )

I trust republicans as far as I can throw them and believe me, I throw them often to evaluate the exact distances.

I hate to be so partisan, but since nearly every republican is a social conservative, I pretty much hate them all.

Note that being republican and voting republican are two different things - a very good friend of mine (who I hope will leave a big, long comment that will escalate into some sort of debate) is financially conservative, so he votes republican on a bunch of stuff, and we all kick him in the balls for it. I don't know anything about economics, so I just vote for whoever has the coolest sounding name.

"Socially liberal but fiscially conservative" is a nice-sounding way to completely wuss out in a political debate. LIBERAL SOCIAL PROGRAMS COST MONEY. Either you support big-money social welfare programs or you don't, and while it may SOUND like a fine compromise, there is no such thing as "socially liberal but fiscially conservative" when it comes to Social Security or tax cuts. Someone has to pay for cheap university education and student loans, as well as highways and all that jazz, so tell your friend to get with the program!

Also, big laugh at voting Republican because you think Republicans will spend less.

I didn't mean social programs - I just meant in the sense that faggots should be allowed to fuck, blacks should be allowed to vote, and women should be allowed to hold jobs.

I'm waiting for my friend's response.

I guess I wasn't really talking about your friend so much as the annoyingly common reason a lot of people give for voting Republican for no real reason. Perhaps he is a libertarian, my sworn enemy!

why are libertarians your sworn enemy?

Because they have a wildly unrealistic and sinister view of what would happen to society if everyone were free as the birds and didn't have to pay taxes. Yeah, I like freedom as much as the next guy, but libertarian freedom is "nasty, brutish, and short", like Hobbes said.

i don't believe in that

what i believe in, is everyone is free to do most anything, so long as it does not negatively effect others, or infringe on the rights of someone else

this is *slightly* different from most public law, as public law basically comes at the angle of "protecting people from themselves" ... to me, if you smoke dope and it kills you, tough shit... run with scissors? great! just don't go asking for my help when you fall on them

as far as paying taxes... it's not like i don't want to pay taxes, i just want *DIRECT* control on where it goes... a simple pie chart to fill out on my tax return would be enough, like

please allocate my tax money as follows:

25% defense
10% social services
50% infrastructure development
15% small business incentives

the way i see it, the govt should be no different then any other service i buy... i buy via taxes, roads, social programs, defense, currency minting, etc.. i expect to have some say on where my money goes, since its obvious the current "democratic" system is broken

i have considered myself "socially liberal but fiscally conservatives" ... i'm against most "social programs", but i'm "liberal" in the fact that people should be able to do what they want, without the republican party acting as agents of god or pulling this selective "morality" bullshit

social security == bad, axe it

tax cuts == good if we're talking people in the $30-$90k/yr bracket, or small businesses that make less then $200k/yr ...

i am self-employed, landing in the middle of that bracket, and i can look forward to uncle sam taking 30.3% of *MY* money ... it's like i'm living in canada or something

i dunno what's worse... *MY* money going to poor ignorant ingrates who use it to go buy a 40 and slap some hoe's, or a bunch of weekend warriors hiking through the desert playing shoot-em-up

"cheap university education" ... let the students pay for it, or get a sponsor themselves... college is overrated anyway

highways == make them toll roads

I really hope some of my other friends respond to some of your excellent comments - I'm running out of stema.

College may be overrated, but it's fun as hell. And we do need some standard to weed out the morons from the retards.
