“Tatsu, honey, tell Mama what’s wrong,” Ueda Misaki said as she entered his son’s room.
After his short talk with his father, Tatsuya went to the “glass house”-that’s what he calls their mansion in the city-for their weekly family dinner. He called it that because of its modern design. Its walls are mostly of glass making it look like literally a glass house. He used to love living there because of the simplicity in design and the modern and lush interiors. Even though the house is of contemporary design, the people inside-the servants and helps mainly-are still quite old-fashioned. They speak in too formal language imposed on them by his grandfather. And even though, he’s no longer around-bless his soul-his rules still holds true.
One of the reasons he moved out when he started in the university is to learn how to be independent. Being in a house where everything he wants and need is just at his beck or call won’t teach him anything. His father agreed with him immediately and took a lot of cajoling on her mother’s part. They agreed that they would have a family dinner every week to stay in touch. They are quite a tight-knit family since there’s just the three of them.
And like every week, he comes home. As soon as he got in, he went straight to his bedroom. Not bothering to drop by his mother’s room to say hi. He sat on his bed and hugged his knees. That’s how his mother, who came in with snacks, saw him that way and was concerned with her only child.
“Dad is back to bugging me about getting a girlfriend--No, a wife,” Tatsuya said with a pout.
She chuckled. “You’ve already graduated. So what’s wrong about going out with girls?” his mother asked.
“...”
Misaki saw his son hesitate and buried his head behind his knees.
“Sweetie, you know you can tell me anything.”
Tatsuya peeked at his mother. “I don’t want you to hate me.”
“Why would I hate you? I love you no matter what,” she tried to console him.
Tatsuya sighed. “I guess I have to tell you about it sooner or later. It’s getting harder to keep it to myself and I don’t like hiding things from you,” he explained.
Misaki waited patiently for what his son is about to say.
“Ano~ I do appreciate everything Dad is trying to do. He really thinks he’s helping me out. It’s not that I don’t want to go on a date. It’s just that I don’t like to date girls,” Tatsuya said then lowered his head. “I wouldn’t say sorry for what I am because I’m not. I don’t feel ashamed either. I just care for the two of you too much that’s why I don’t want to disappoint you.”
“You could never disappoint me. It doesn’t matter what your preference is. You’re still my son and I love you. Like I used to tell you, as long as you’re true to yourself you’d be able to live a happy life whether people agree with you or not. One’s sexuality is not the measure of a person. It’s how you live your life and how you treat people around you,” she explained.
Tatsuya hugged his mother. He’s never been more grateful in his life to be born from such an amazing woman.
“Mama, have I ever told you you’re amazing?” he said while hugging her tighter.
“I think you’ve said it when I bake you a cake when you were five. But you can always tell me again,” she chuckled and hugged him back.
Tatsuya laughed. “You’re not only amazing but beautiful and youthful. You’re the best! I’m sorry I hid it from you” Then he kissed her on the cheeks.
“It’s okay. I know what you’ve gone through was not easy. We’ll talk to your Dad later. For now, have some snacks. Dinner will be served at around 7,” she said before walking out of the door.

Hana smiled to herself as she browse through a wedding magazine. Who would have thought that the heir of Nishikido Industries is wrapped around her pretty little finger? He even proposed to her just because she told him she won’t move in with him unless he do it the right way. Of course, she accepted. It would be stupid not to.
She recalled how she met Ryo. Their schools sponsored a joint social event-a dance-and there enter Ryo looking his usual handsome and cool self. Girls are ogling and fawning over him not only because he’s hot but also for the reason everyone knows-he’s the heir of Nishikido Industries. Hana knows that if she wants Ryo to notice her, she shouldn’t be one of those girls obviously trying to be noticed. And true enough, Ryo asked him to dance and by the end of the night, she’s the girl he was driving home. A few weeks later, he confessed and she resisted saying yes eagerly.
Her curiosity was piqued when Ryo told her that he would introduce her to his best friend. Ryo has always been talking about his best friend-Tatsuya this, Tatsuya that. He thinks of him too highly and judging by the way he talks about him, Hana knows it would be hard to please the slightly older man. She was careful around Tatsuya, whom she noticed to be too observant and critical. But she played her cards right and after two long years, Ryo finally proposed. She smiled wider.
It has only been a week since the proposal but she can’t wait to get the wedding preparations started. She even met with a wedding coordinator-why bother worrying about everything when your fiancée can afford to hire one-to plan the most extravagant wedding she can think of. She has to make sure to be the envy of all her friends.
She was choosing between two designers when the doorbell rang. She walked to the door with excitement thinking Ryo would be visiting her. She’s already thinking of coaxing him to take her shopping tomorrow.
“Okaasan,” she greeted putting on a sweet smile to mask her surprise.
“You don’t have the right to call me mother just yet,” Nishikido Yuzuki said.

Tatsuya has finished his snacks and bath. He’s lounging around his room thinking of how he will break the news to his father. He’s too lost in his thought that he was startled when his phone rang. He answered it just before the third ring ends.
“Ryo, what’s up?” he greeted.
“Just want to know if you’re free tonight,” he answered.
“Sorry. Family dinner,” came a clipped answer.
Ryo looked at the phone on his hand. It’s unusual for Tatsuya to be this quiet since they haven’t talked in a while. He used to talk Ryo’s ear off, nagging him for not letting the older man know he’s still alive. Ryo can’t help but be concerned.
“Something wrong?” he asked in concern.
Tatsuya hesitated. “Nope. There’s nothing wrong. Dad was just bugging me to get married. Can’t you be in my place instead since you’re too eager to get married?”
He said those words though they cut them like a knife. He has to. He can’t let his best friend know he doesn’t want him to get married-of course, unless it’s him.
“You can tell him I’ll take your share for now. Since you won’t be coming tonight, I’ll just tell you over the phone then. Will you be my best man?”
“Baka! I’ll kill you if you get another one,” he tried to speak like how a normal best friend would do. But deep inside, he’s already thinking of ways how he would not witness that wedding. “Anyways, I have to go. Dinner will start soon and you know Mama doesn’t like to wait. I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Okay. Bye. Love you, Tatsu!” Ryo said before hanging up.
“I love you too,” Tatsuya said to no one. He sighed and flopped down on the bed. It used to be easy replying to Ryo that he loves him but lately, since Ryo hooked up with Hana, he can’t get himself to say those words unless the other coax him to reply.
One of their servants knocked on the door to inform him that dinner will commence in 15 minutes and that his presence is requested in the dining hall. He told him that he’d be down in a minute. He sighed as soon as the servant was out of earshot. He never liked the formality around the house.
He walked down the hall lined with paintings and some family photos. He stopped to look at one of the pictures hanging there and smiled. It was a picture of him and his father playing basketball when he was in middle school. He passed the picture and entered the dining hall where his parents are already seated. His mom gave him an encouraging smile as he sit down.
Dinner was lively with his father, Ueda Kiyoshi, being his usual funny and talkative self. As usual, they talked about what happened during the week. The Uedas brought up Tatsuya to be articulate and opinionated. They tried to give Tatsuya the freedom to give his views on things. It also helped for them to have a good relationship and open communication. Dinners usually involve exchanging ideas and debating certain topics. And as usual, it would be an enjoyable and refreshing banter between father and son since it’s Mrs. Ueda’s role to be the mediator.
“So Tatsu, regarding the omiai on Friday,” Kiyoshi started after the dessert has been served.
“I’m not going to the omiai, Dad,” Tatsuya interrupted.
“And why not?” he asked.
“Sweetheart, I know you’re jealous of your friends having their grandchildren but you don’t have to pressure Tatsuya into marrying just because of that. I know you have all good intentions but have you ever considered what Tatsu feels or thinks about what you want him to do?” Misaki said.
“Well... I... No, not really,” he said before turning to Tatsuya. “Son, what don’t you like about meeting beautiful girls?”
“I don’t have anything against meeting them, Dad,” Tatsuya started. He knows he better come out to his father now. He has his mother’s support through all it, he knows. “It’s the idea of marrying them that I don’t like. Like Mama said, I also know you have good intentions. You brought me to be a good person. I don’t want to disappoint you by not giving you what you want.”
“I told you, you will never be a disappointment,” Misaki said looking tenderly at her son. She turned to her husband and said, “Sweetheart, we’ve brought him up well. We’ve guided him all through these years so that he will make the right decisions. But right now, he’s an adult. It’s about time we let him take charge of his life. Whatever he decided to do with it, all we have to do is be his guide and support. We’re done steering him to the right direction. He’s already there.”
“You guys are going in circles, you know? Just get to the point of what you want to tell me,” Kiyoshi said. He sensed that there’s something Tatsuya wanted to tell him.
“Dad, I’m gay,” Tatsuya simply said.
Kiyoshi’s jaw dropped. He knew the news is something serious seeing that his wife has been trying to mediate for Tatsuya but he never thought it’s this serious. And yet, he wasn’t repulsed with the revelation. He loves his kid. He took a deep breath before speaking.
“I would say I’m disappointed. Not because of what you told me but because it means I won’t get a grandchild,” Kiyoshi said looking sad. “But it won’t do you good even if I force you to get married now would it? Guess I have to accept it as it is. I don’t hate or disgusted with you. Being “gay” doesn’t make you a lesser person. But I still wish to have a grandchild.”
“Dad! Thank you!” Tatsuya said with teary eyes. “I can adopt so that you’ll have a grandchild,” he compromised.
“Yeah, you can do that,” his father said with a smile on his face. And then he frowned before saying, “Do you want me to look for a boyfriend for you instead?”
“Dad!” Tatsuya said before groaning. For a while he thought, his dad would stop being a matchmaker once he said he’s gay. But no, his father still feels like playing cupid. Misaki, on the other hand, reacted by smacking his husband on the head.

Hana ushered Nishikido Yuzuki inside her apartment. After the customary greetings, Yuzuki went straight to the agenda of her visit.
“Here, sign this,” she said handing Hana a folder. The younger woman looked at her, puzzled.
“It’s a pre-nuptial agreement. You have to sign it or else you will not marry my son. I assume you know how to read so you’ll understand the conditions there. But to sum it up to you, you will not be able to leech on my son’s money and inheritance,” she said with an intimidating tone.
“I’ll give you a week to think it over. And should you cancel the wedding, you have to announce it publicly. No need to go to Ryo and use your acting skills; he knows about this pre-nuptial agreement already. You could see that he already signed it,” she said before leaving Hana with a dumbfounded look on her face.
A/N: So, what do you think? I want to read your comments. ^_^
