HULK MUST SEE!

When I found out that "The Avengers" movie was written and directed by Joss Whedon, guess what jumped to the front of my list of social activities.

Confession time. I managed to have an almost completely unproductive day. I spent the morning reading “Dance of Dragons” by George R. R. Martin and most of the rest of the day playing a military strategy game. Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire” series has been turned into an HBO series, and it is relentlessly grim. The supernatural evils are more of a teaser, an excuse to write it as fantasy instead of historical fiction (it feels a lot like War of the Roses with some Shakespeare thrown in), because almost the entire focus of the novel is how badly people treat each other, and that it doesn’t matter if you are a good or bad person, a winner or a loser, ambition and war will make you miserable. Love takes a beating, too, as if Martin believes in the long run it is impossible to make a good or reasonable decision; it will always bite you on the ass sooner or later. And woe be onto you if you ever believed that knights were chivalrous.
