During dinner I had one of the most intense discussions of private emotions I’ve had since I moved to China, and the irony of it is, the discussion was of why she couldn’t feel intense emotions. It all had to do with family issues, and while I can’t go into detail about it, it made perfectly good sense no matter the “cultural barriers” between people. Culture might be a wall that separates people, but its roots are shallow and can be dug under by anyone with sufficient determination, or seen over by people with their heads in the clouds. The basic psychology of family, love, and marriage is the same no matter where you go, no matter how much a country’s culture might try to twist it into unnatural shapes.
