Living the High Life

Here I am at the Half Moon Inn in Culver City, CA. It's a fun little place. In places with real seasons the windows do more than keep the rain out. The double-panes deaden the noise as well as keep the heat in. No such luck in SoCal. Traffic noises, tavern concerts, people on their cell phones down the hall all come through with great fidelity. This can be issue for someone who likes to go to bed at 10:00 PM. Before modern televisions with auto-muting came along I would simply tune to a blank channel and adjust the volume so that the white noise muffled the real noises. That's long gone in the HDTV era.
As always there's an adaptation. Google for "white noise file" and up come multiple selections. Set auto-loop in the player, turn the screen brightness down on the laptop, and it's Happy Sleep Land for me. The only thing to be concerned about are the subliminal voices buried in the noise telling me to drive on the sidewalks during rush hour.
