the human condition

I went and saw the movie Gamer tonight (hmm, bad english there, but fuck it). Aside from it being a movie, its an interesting concept of humanity. Given the opportunity, how would we as a society react to the capability of controlling other human beings. Programs like Second Life are what I consider first-generation applications, but technology needs to advance further before we'll be able to truly experience the capabilities of living or being in someone elses flesh. There's another movie coming out called Surrogates which also has a similar feel to it. It reminds me of Rossum's Universal Robots (I think...) that I read in high school Or, failing memory that I do have, maybe it was another story I read somewhere.

Anyhoo, what I'm remembering is that people were dying off since everyone sat alone in their homes and interacted with the world via their computers. People never actually saw one another, and it was considered taboo to try to visit someone in the flesh. I wonder if we will really progress to that point in the future. Maybe too much technology is a bad thing?
