The hamsters in my brain

I have been thinking about this topic for a while now. Maybe it’s not so much the Arts and Sciences that are turning people away but the competitions themselves. The fact that people have to win something and compete against others and fight to be heard, that is making the group smaller and smaller. It seems that it’s no longer a matter of doing something because you have passion for it but that you have to win to achieve a reward. What if we just stop the competitions and start having arts displays. With no judging and no comments, no arguing over who becomes the next this or that and just go back to the beginning of why we do this, because we have passion for it!
I sit here listening to people’s thoughts and ideas about how this should be run or that should be fought. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that’s bad but I think people are just forgetting why we are here and why we want other people to join us. Maybe because we have passion for what we are doing and we love to hang out with people who also have passion for some of the same sorts of things. I had a phone conversation with a lady yesterday who had heard about the SCA and wanted to get together with a group that was near her. She had stated that the reason her family wanted to come to events was because they have always been in theater and loved to dress up and play different characters. For her it wasn’t about just being more period or sewing it a special way but just being different, trying different things with people who might share some of the same ideas.
I don’t know if this will just make more people mad and it’s not my objective. These are just my ideas and thoughts, so please don’t assume that these are words from my office or the Crown. Nor are they the directions of things to come. These are just my thoughts, so please respect them for what they are.
