I pay a large sum of money every year for my college education, and it's paying off a little.
I am taking abnormal psychology right now, where we are learning about pretty much every mental disorder there is. Well, maybe not EVERY but most I would have to say.
Prior to taking this class, I pretty much believed people who said they had some sort of mental disease. Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Agorophobia, OCD, what have you...there's a wide variety to choose from.
The more and more I learn about these disorders, I think of some of the people I know who say "they have" these disorders. Well, they don't. Not even close.
Just because you have a tendency for order and perfection does not make you OCD.
Just because you aren't "into going out" does not mean you have agorophobia.
Just because you worry sometimes about finances, or if you're going to pass a class or get a promotion, does not mean you have Anxiety Disorder.
Just because you're moody doesn't mean you're bipolar or manic depressive, or that you have Borderline Personality Disorder.
I am not negating the people out there who truly have these disorders. I've learned much about them, they are heartbreaking to hear about and I feel for anyone who has them. It's not something to brag about. Most people who have these disorders, do their best to keep it to themselves. They don't make it common knowledge and they don't use it as an excuse to get away with acting inappropriately, just for the fuck of it.
Just don't be ignorant. Have you been diagnosed? Well, until you have been, stop it. Stop trying to draw attention to yourselves. It's not "cool" or "in" to have a mental disease. Or is it? Am I that far out of the loop these days that this is OK to give yourself these labels? Does saying you have a disorder make it acceptable for you to be an asshat? No, it doesn't. If you know what the symptoms are to these disorders, and you have some of them, by all means, seek help. If you don't know the symptoms, but you want to say you have the disorder...please. Shut the hell up.
P.S. I am not directing this to anyone who might be reading this, I'm speaking of people I know in general.
/end rant.
