Pay-to-play and CYA

I mentioned "pay-to-play" as part of a 'worst' change in the 5-question meme. Let me clarify that for the folks who have asked or yelled...

I am not rabid about this issue. I can see both sides, and am, if anything, still ambiguous about it. I see advantages for some geographic regions and no impact or negative impact on others. However:

I agree completely.

Moreover it furthur supports the idea that the INC is the SCA, when they do none of the work -- they're just a central database. The individual members and groups do all of the work; it is to them that our money should go.

I don't want to argue that one over again; We're all right from our points of view. Mostly, my point is that it generates a lot of heat that we could use better to do other things.

Pay to Play is obnoxious.

In the meantime, does Duncan have a wallet or other object that he always carries his money in? Put his card in with his money. Does he have a driver's license? Make him responsible for having his SCA card when checking into an event.

When he goes to college he will have to do this sort of thing with his student id card, so maybe it would be good practice.

At the moment in his wallet he keeps his money, his school ID, his ATM card for his bank account, and the piece of paper we printed off the SCA Website confirming his membership a while ago. We added the paper after the last event, but it's like the "at which house is the passport?" game.

This policy has several problems (some of which you mentioned). The divisiveness it's engendered is high on the list; this is, possibly, the most destructive policy the SCA has ever come up with. It cannot possibly we worth the income it has produced.

Exactly why I mourn because of it. Any policy that created these schisms would be "the worst."

They actually did it?

JEEZ. I cannot BELIEVE they actually did it.

How the heck is a person supposed to figure out whether they like this stuff or not if they can't try before they buy?

They can -- they just have to pay extra to get in.
