Close your eyes and think about what you've been missing in your life lately. It could be a person, pet, place, thing, occasion, feeling. Anything at all that you miss dearly.
He doesn't need to close his eyes to see the one thing he's missed more than anything else in his life. Lately, he prefers not closing his eyes at all, because when he does it's all too easy to remember how it was before. Doesn't want to remember the nights he spent reminiscing past mistakes, nights in which ghosts from the past came to haunt him; came to remind him of all he'd done wrong.
And when he does close his eyes, late at night, after hours of listening to the comforting sound of Brendan's breathing, Patrick remembers; remembers the man he once was, and how much he's lost these past years. If there's one thing that's missing from his life now is that, the man he once was, the confidence he once had.
It worries him because he knows he himself can do without, has learned to live with himself, but he's not to sure Brendan can. And for him he wants to try; try to find the man he once was, or merely a piece of his former self. Maybe then he'll be able to close his eyes again without worrying; worrying that the one thing he's gone without for so many years is no longer there when he opens his eyes again.
Maybe.
Dreams die hard and you hold them in your hands long after they've turned to dust.
