Christmas Morning

Follows this.He woke up feeling a bit disorientated, vaguely remembering regaining consciousness some time during the night and after a few words from the doctor, falling into a restless sleep again. The pain was still there, but nowhere near as bad as it had been when he firs woke up last night. Grateful for small favors, Patrick allowed the nurse ( Read more... )

The firs thing he heard when he woke up was the sound of Brendan's voice, unable to make out any actual words and a bit worried about the silence that followed the man's voice, Patrick slowly blinked his eyes open and waited until Brendan - or the person he'd been talking to - came into focus.

"Hey there. Have a good sleep?" he said gently as Patrick blinked and tried to wake up.

Tess knew enough to keep silent for now, and she studied Patrick's face as he awoke, thinking of the many times she had watched her mother's face in just the same way.

Patrick nodded and said, his voice still sleepy and a bit hoarse, "Rather." He then managed to open his eyes altogether and, after blinking a couple of times, both Tess and Brendan's faces came into focus. "Hey," he mumbled, a faint smile crossing his face as he looked up at the two of them.

Brendan stood up and adjusted Patrick's pillows a little, making it easier for him to see them both, and not have his back get uncomfortable. He also leant down and gave him a kiss and winked as he sat down again, on the arm of the chair for the moment. He indicated the basket Tess had brought with a turn of his head and grinned. "Tess brought a basket of cookies she's made for us," he told him, "and I said next time she 'as t' wear a red cape, with a hood and all."

"I did not say that," Tess protected with mock indignance. She thought about the Red Riding Hood routine she'd done at work once, but felt it would be prudent not to mention that right now. She smiled at Patrick instead. "I hope you like cookies. There are a lot of different kinds in there. I figure it would be part of a welcome break from hospital food."

He grinned and nodded. "Thanks - and yeah, I do like cookies. Always found them a rather welcome break from all food, really."

"No, I said it!" he laughed, rolling his eyes and giving her shoulders a hug. "And trust you to find the secret to getting food int' him," he added with a smirk. "Me? I have to make silly aeroplane noises and play choo-choo trains, and you just waltz in with fresh-baked cookies and have him ready to eat!" He gave Patrick a wink, the statement teasing him only.

"I wouldn't eat if you did that to me either. Besides, I know what kind of food they serve in places like this, and it doesn't even come close to home-baked cookies, or home-baked anything else, or even something as crappy as McDonald's. Am I right?" she asked Patrick.

He shook his head. "Haven't eaten an awful lot here to be honest. Brendan's been kind enough to get me some proper food. But that - even with the aeroplane noises - don't have anything on home-baked cookies, I'm afraid."

Putting on a serious pout Brendan folded his arms as if severely affronted. "Well, after all that trouble I went to t' get the special spoon and all!" he declared. "You can forget about that from now on, back to regular old cutlery!" He looked at Tess and lifted his chin. "And I'll have you know missy that Sam's been preparing meals for me to bring in, so it hasn't been a case of him only getting hospital rations!"

"Okay, okay." She held up her hands. "I didn't know. Gosh, will either of you ever forgive me? Do I have to pull a little sister pout and cry?"

"I don't know about that - perhaps it'll work on Brendan. Because I've never been too susceptible to things like that, really," Patrick murmured, a small smirk crossing his face.

Brendan just rolled his eyes at her and chuckled. "Stop with the pity-party invitations already, I was joking! Hell, I said you found the perfect way to get him to eat, when I've tried everything under the sun!" He looked across at Patrick. "Women!" he exclaimed, bracing himself for the hit he knew was likely to follow.

And he got it on the arm as Tess stood up. "Well, I don't know when the other food is getting here, but I think we should celebrate its impending arrival by each having a cookie." She picked up the basket and listed all of the kinds within. "Boys?"

He listened as Tess listed the types of cookies she'd baked, she'd obviously put quite some time and effort in baking them. Unable to keep himself from smiling as she mentioned his actual favorites, he shook his head and murmured, "The sherry butternut drops sound rather tempting - not to mention it's probably the closest to alcohol I'm allowed to have in here."
