Christmas Morning

Jan 09, 2006 13:05

Follows this.He woke up feeling a bit disorientated, vaguely remembering regaining consciousness some time during the night and after a few words from the doctor, falling into a restless sleep again. The pain was still there, but nowhere near as bad as it had been when he firs woke up last night. Grateful for small favors, Patrick allowed the nurse ( Read more... )

Patrick had been sleeping, lunch having been a fairly interesting attempt by the hospital to provide its patients with some Christmas cheer. It was a major task, getting meals out to so many in one go, as Brendan had learnt in the last year at the bar, and his appreciation for the task had changed his attitude to hospital meals.

He glanced at his watch, Tess having said she'd be by in the afternoon, and wondered which might arrive first, her or Sam's parcel of food from the bar.

There was a soft knock on the door and Tess stood there. She'd had no idea what to get Patrick for Christmas, or if he'd even want anything, and she didn't want to give something to Brendan without getting anything for Patrick. But it was Christmas Day, and Brendan had said it was Patrick's birthday too. So even though she knew there would be food coming, she'd taken the time the day before to make several different kinds of cookies. Not just any cookies, but several different kinds. Ginger cookies, hazelnut crunch cookies, rosemary-cheese spritzes, toasted coconut marshmallows, citrus squares, Mexican wedding cookies, sherry butter nut drops, white chocolate holiday bark, and chocolate peppermint pizzelles. She'd gotten up early and spent most of the day making them before going to Face's; she hoped they were all right.

Brendan looked up from where he was watching the movie on the new iPod and sees Tess, his face lighting up when he saw her at the door. He glanced at Patrick as he pulled the earpieces out and stood, making his way to the door. Pulling it open he could see basket she was carrying and grinned.

"So where's the little red hood, hmmm?" he asked, leaning in and giving her a kiss. "Merry Christmas," he added then held the door open for her. "He's asleep at the moment," he said, glancing at the bed as he led her in.

"Ha ha." She kissed him back and went to set the basket on the table against the wall. "I figured cookies would be safe, since I didn't know what to get him. Everyone likes cookies, including you. This is my gourmet Christmas present," she whispered. "And Merry Christmas to you too." She looked a Patrick. "He doing okay today?"

As tempted as he was to look in the basket he said he'd wait and let Patrick have the honour. With a quick glance down at the sleeping man Brendan shrugged one shoulder honestly. "He's doing OK now, but it seems it was a bit of a rough night," he replied softly, fingers trailing across a ridge in the blankets that covered him. He pulled up the other chair so they could sit close and talk.

"So how was the rest of your Christmas Eve?" he asked as they sat down.

She looked at Patrick, thinking of many rough nights she'd had with her mom. Damn, she was so glad that Patrick was going to get better. "I can't wait till he gets out of here, for both your sakes." She smiled. "And Christmas Eve was nice. So was this morning. See?" She touched her necklace that Face had given her, and the earrings Vic had given her. "From both my boys."

Brendan lets out a low whistle. "Well, who is a lucky girl then?" he joked. He still wasn't comfortable with the situation, but would say nothing. Not his place, and she's a big girl.

He reached into the pocket of his jacket, hanging on the back of his chair and pulled out a gift-wrapped parcel. He knew her cellphone had been damaged, but still worked usually, but wanted to make sure she always had it working when she needed it. Handing it over he gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Merry Christmas, Tessa."

"Me, even though I'll admit I sometimes feel really guilty about having two of them. Just because I hate making either of them jealous, but I just can't choose."

She took the package from him, blinking at the name. No one had ever really called her that; she'd always been Teresa or Tess. "Merry Christmas, Brendan. By the way, you called me Tessa. Did you mean to? I like it. You're the only one who's ever called me that before, believe it or not."

"Well, they're both big boys, and reckon they've learnt how to deal with 'disappointment' in their lives at some point." Haven't we all?

He grinned when she asked about the name and shrugged lightly. "Just came out. I dunno. You know how it is."

"True. Although I really hope they don't find me disappointing."

She smiled, then began to unwrap the present. "You can call me that any time, if you want to. But I promise not to call you Brenda in return."

He snorts at her promise and thanks her, watching as she unwraps the box containing the new phone.

"And as for those two men of yours," he adds, "they just better watch themselves. Won't put up with 'em doing wrong by you, luv."

"So far, so good. But I'll let you know so you can go Big Brother on whoever fucks up and open up a can of whoop ass." She paused as she looked at the phone. "Wow, this is really nice, Brendan. It looks like it has everything."

"Including buttons that work consistently, and not randomly whenever the mood takes 'em," he pointed out with a smirk. "No reason now not to call, right?"

She blushed a little, then stuck her tongue out at him. "No, not a single reason at all." She set about poking buttons and trying to figure out what all this phone could do, holding it up and taking Brendan's picture without warning.

"Damn, knew that probably wasn't a good idea," he groaned softly, shaking his head as she started playing with the camera part.

"Oh come on, you're cute. If you weren't my brother, I'd..." She deliberately let the sentence hang as she snapped another picture of Brendan's expression.
