Doctor Who, Series 8, No Spoilers

Like every other Doctor Who fan - in particular those of us who are keeping up with the new tv storylines - I'm revelling in the Series 8 programs which premiered (in the UK anyway) on 23 August 2014, starring Peter Capaldi.

All that waiting following on from the 2013 Christmas special and we’re finally on the roller-coaster …  already up to Episode 2.

Before you know it, we’ll be watching the Season finale  and facing the unravellment (perhaps) of yet another complex plot development woven  - appropriately in tartan - and over many months to its end-point (which may be the 2014 Christmas special … or not).

I keep in mind an expectation which I read on the internet that Jenna Coleman will be leaving the series at this year’s end.

There are, it seems, a number of detractors to Jenna as the Doctor’s companion (or is that Carer?), Clara Oswald.  A prejudice I don’t share.

I can imagine no other actor playing Clara, it’s a part Jenna has made her own, and I will be sorry to see her leave the show.

I like her no-nonsense manner - which sometimes is nigh on British reserve - and which, after all, suits a Victorian governess and even, to some extent, a modern-day nanny and school teacher.  And it makes sense to move an arm’s length (or two) away from the oftimes playful, sometimes sensual and at other times, to be honest, fairly acidic character of Amy Pond.  Karen Gillan, of course, playing the role of this character appropriately to suit the storyline.

But with the Doctor and his companions (or maybe one day, HER companions?) they will come and go as they always have, passing on the baton (even over long-distances), to be remembered quintessentially as space and time-travellers with a trove of richly entertaining stories stretching our imaginations in many different directions.

On the whole, variety and the different mixtures of Doctor and companion(s) having been one cause of the show, “Doctor Who”, enduring this past half a century.
