We called the vet and found "Gimpy" was ready for pick up. We did some errands, and stopped by. The vet says the circulation in the leg looks good and it's unlikely she'll lose the leg at this point. He gave us some medicine, and we paid the remaining bill, which was another $100. We have to bring her back next week to remove the stitches and get XRays. She still drags her leg a bit when she walks, but then again, I remember that I was kinda draggy as well after my leg was broken.
We used one of our large carriers, with access on the top and front. She mewed a bit in the car. I think she missed the vet. When we got home, the mama cat was in the courtyard and gave us her usual greeting: The "welcome home, stay away" hiss. The kitten meowed in return. We left the carrier in the courtyard while unloading the groceries and let the two talk to each other a bit. Yes, Mama Cat, your kitten is OK, but no, we aren't going to return her to the wild.
We brought the carrier in last and looked for a couple small bowls for food and water, and something slightly larger for litter. We're keeping her in the carrier for now. With 6 other cats, we don't want any undue trauma beyond what we're bound to get already. We bought a bag of kitten food, and the small bowl we gave her pretty much disappeared in no time. Brenda had a few pieces in her hand while I was searching for bowls, and her appetite was so voracious, she took a piece of Brenda's finger with the last piece.
The carrier now sits on the floor under the dining/computer room table where we can watch her when we're up, and the other cats can introduce themselves. At night, we'll put it into the computer lab/parts storage, which is the warmer of the outlying rooms that are off-limits to the other cats.
So far, three of the other cats are hiding in the bedroom, Flea is on the Anime DVD cabinet, and Ash and Achilles have strolled by the check out the visitor. Achilles appears indifferent, but seem to be the most curious of the bunch. That's surprising as Ash is usually the diplomat that greets every new arrival.
Now that the kitten is pretty much gorged, she's nodding off in the bedding of old clothing we line our carriers in... I hope she has some happy dreams.
