It turns out this guy has a doctor's note for any charges of asshattery: three years ago, he was in a very serious car accident and suffered a brain injury that has made it very hard for him to edit what comes out of his mouth. Apparently he hates this about himself, but I'll have to take Lizz's word for that, as he never once apologized during the course of the conversation.
I still don't feel bad. The problem wasn't the lack of a filter; occasional faux pas or awkwardness could be tolerated for a good guy with a problem. The problem was that, uncensored, he's not a good guy.
But anyway, I can't stand people who say they are honest and direct when really they're just fudging rude. Honesty is an attitude of fair dealing with people, not a blank check to shoot your mouth off. I wish more people understood this. (And I wish more guys understood that "I'm busy, no thanks," is not a personal and permanent judgment of their worth as a person. *sigh*)
Because can you imagine if she had taken him to say...a work or school function? Embarrassing. Worst part is, she doesn't seem to think so. He makes her laugh, and she never has to worry that he's lying to her.
You're right. Not having a filter doesn't change the person behind what he said. I mean, if I couldn't filter right, I'd probably have a few sordid tales but nothing so jerkish.
She probably should have warned you ahead of time and you may have seen him in a different light.
I'm not sure I could deal with that level of dreckitude hiding behind a disability.
