It turns out this guy has a doctor's note for any charges of asshattery: three years ago, he was in a very serious car accident and suffered a brain injury that has made it very hard for him to edit what comes out of his mouth or realize its effect on people. Apparently he hates this about himself, but I'll have to take Lizz's word for that, as he never once apologized during the course of the conversation.
I still don't feel bad.
I asked Lizz at dinner tonight: "The entire time he was here, could he allow any other two people to have a conversation that wasn't about him? The entire time he was here, did anything genuinely kind come out of his mouth?"
He should be kicked to the curb, phone number blocked, deleted from all friends lists and such within the same 60 second period of time. I told her he was bad news, and I didn't like him, but she's a big girl and can do as she likes. If it makes her happy, I'm happy for her, and I'll do my best to be civil to him. I just really wish she'd run the other way.
But she likes the "brutal honesty," because she never has to wonder what he's thinking or if he's lying to her. There's a kind of safety in that.
