This started out as an entry only about the new trend in advertising where the companies are saying that their products are better because they are patriotic. Instead this will be about many of the problems with advertising including the biggest one of all.
Commercials don't make any attempt to sell their products. They either try to make a funny commercial that turns out really gay half the time or they bash their competitors product.
I would love to see commercials that simply say this is the products, this is what it does, this is why it works well.
Rather than showing people grooving to a song in their Mitsubishi while the drive, how about something that says the car gets 30 miles per gallon, it goes 0-60 in 8 seconds, it has a 200 foot braking distance at 60mph. Some facts that will tell the consumer what they are buying.
I know the reason for this is because the make crappy products therefore they would be falsely advertising if they were to make certain claims. That is ok by me. If they make shit, I want to know. I also want to know who make the best product.
If one company begins this the others will have no choice but to follow. The only catch is that the company would have to actually make a quality product. The other companies who desire to compete with this new honesty about quality product advertising would have to step up and better their products. This would raise the bell curve of the quality of products greatly.
The computer business is reinventing itself constantly because they have now leeway to twist words around to make their product sound better. A 900mHz processor is a 900mHz processor no matter who makes it. Same with RAM and DVD-ROM speeds. They are all controlled by the numbers.
If commercials begin to show the statistics of their product, technology in all fields would see the same growth that the computer field saw.
Back to the beginning, tonight at work I noticed little American flags on the frozen green beans. Above the flag were the words "Made In America". It's funny how that wasn't on the packaging a couple months ago. This is simply companies way to leech off of the re-found patriotism of the American people in order to convince the consumer that if they really care about America the best thing would be to buy their products.
There is also that trend of playing known songs in the background of car commercials. I know I'll run out and buy a $20,000 car because I like the song on the commercial. How gay is that?
Feel free to respond with you're own thoughts on the problems of advertising in today's society.
