Nothing new to blog really at the moment, so I'll just post some of my recent favourite listening. These are full albums, and I can give you a good heads up as to where to track them down yourself if needed.
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (Modern Progressive Rock) - Catchy, virtuosic, and every track too long to have on the radio, this Steven Wilson fronted group slays their 2007 effort Fear of a Blank Planet in it's entirety, along with material from Nil Recurring, In Absentia, Signify, and Deadwing.
Eluveitie - Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion (Acoustic Celtic/Folk) - A departure from their usual Celtic/Folk Metal, this exposes much of the underlying tones that their heaviness just builds on.
Ihsahn - After (Progressive/Extreme Metal) - SAXOPHONE RIFFS AND SOLOS. ON A METAL ALBUM. Channeling moments reminiscent of Pink Floyd, Ihsahn has elevated his work to a level of insanity matched only by outfits such as Strapping Young Lad. As with other releases labeled "extreme", the tag is used to cover the fusion of Metal subgenres such as Doom, Folk, Norwegian Black, Swedish Melodic Death, and Progressive.
How To Destroy Angels - How To Destroy Angels (Post-Nine Inch Nails) - Trent Reznor and his wife Mariqueen combine with Producer Atticus Ross to produce something that's worthy of both a strip joint and a rave.
The Angelic Process - And Your Blood Is Full Of Honey (Drone Metal/Shoegaze) - Very much a "wall of sound", this is an all-out assault on the senses that only The Mars Volta have come close to.
Cloudkicker - The Discovery (Instrumental Progressive/Post Metal) - Layers of heavy sound that a vocalist and lyrics would just ruin.
Sleep - Dopesmoker (early Stoner Doom) - A single track, clocks in at 62 minutes, and great to just zone out to.
